The experience of using continous glucose monitoring in people with type 1 diabetes : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]
Bakgrund
Abstract [en]
Background
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leading to lifelong insulin deficiency and the need for insulin therapy. Self-care is central to managing the disease and includes insulin therapy, glucose control, and lifestyle adjustments. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has been developed as a tool that provides real-time information about glucose levels, which can facilitate self-care, improve glucose control, and increase quality of life. Despite this, access to CGM varies depending on healthcare systems, insurance, and financial resources. Poor glucose control can eventually lead to complications that affect the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and cardiovascular system.
Aim
This literature review aims to highlight individuals’ with type 1 diabetes experience of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) as a self-care measure.
Method
Design
This study is based on a non-systematic literature review comprising 10 scientific articles. All articles were retrieved from the databases CINAHL and PubMed. A non-systematic literature review makes it possible to compile existing knowledge and create a broader understanding of the subject without following a strict systematic process. The purpose is to provide an in-depth and informative background as well as insights, rather than a comprehensive mapping. By using already published scientific articles, this approach allows for practicing a systematic way of working within a limited timeframe while also developing a deeper understanding of individuals’ experiences. The results have been compiled using an integrated data analysis.
Results
The results highlighted that continuous glucose monitoring overall has a positive impact on self-care with people who have diabetes type 1. However, access to diabetes technology varied depending on the country, demographic and socioeconomic background.
Conclusions
CGM as a self-care measure is generally perceived and described positively, as it contributes to improved glucose control. However, the positive experience is strongly linked to the technical reliability of CGM. Access to diabetes technology varies among different socioeconomic groups in society. Consequently, inadequate use of CGM and adherence is due to various underlying factors.
