Patients with colorectal cancer and how they experience psychosocial support in periopertive care : A non-systematic literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund

Abstract [en]

Background

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common form of cancer that is often treated surgically, sometimes shortly after having been diagnosed. Both the reception of a cancer diagnosis and having to undergo surgery are psychologically challenging experiences. How patients experience perioperative care in terms of psychosocial support has not yet received a lot of attention.

Aim

The objective of this literary review has been to describe patient experiences of psychosocial support provided in perioperative care in connection with surgery for colorectal cancer.

Method

A non-systematic literature review was undertaken. Data collection consisted of searches in databases PubMed and CINAHL. Data analysis was carried out according to the integrative review methodology (Whittemore & Knafl, 2005). Katie Eriksson’s theory of suffering (1994) was used to discuss the results.

Results

Twelve peer-reviewed scientific articles were included in this study. Patient experiences of psychosocial support were grouped into three main themes. Experiences of information and communication illustrate the importance of a personalised approach and ensuring comprehension. Experiences of emotional support and treatment were important for patients’ ability to manage their own feelings and prepare for a life after hospital. Experiences of social support finally indicated patients’ need to be seen and confirmed as persons to enable them to build up the ability for self-care and to be able to cope with the foreign environment that a stay in hospital often entails.

Conclusions

Patients experienced varying needs of psychosocial support in the perioperative phase. Psychosocial support should therefore be adapted to suit the needs of the individual. Not to provide psychosocial support could lead to unnecessary suffering and thus constitutes lack of adequate care. By identifying patient needs of psychosocial support, caring strategies can be developed and tailored to promote recovery, well-being and quality of life.
