Intimate partner violence : Victims of violence experiences of seeking care at the emergency department (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Domestic violence is considered a serious social problem and people exposed to violence are a patient group that seeks emergency care. Purpose: The patient's experiences of seeking care at an emergency department after being exposed to domestic violence. Method: The literature review was based on the databases PubMed, PsycINFO and CINAHL. Original articles with both a quantitative and qualitative approach were used to search for knowledge and evidence within the selected nursing area. The articles were quality-reviewed using Sophiahemmet University's assessment basis for scientific classification. The analysis process was systematically carried out based on the Polit and Beck analysis method nine steps model. Results: Identification of complex problems for patients who describe both positive and negative experiences, mixed emotions, and different forms of interactions of seeking care at the emergency department after being exposed to intimate partner violence. The discussion of the results highlights key aspects of the patients' experience and how it is characterized by the treatment in the emergency department, where a lack of knowledge and resources among the nursing staff affects the quality of care that patients receive. The lack of time for nurses affects the care provided to patients and how the role of the specialist nurse can contribute to the quality of care. Conclusion: Limited knowledge in treatment is described as a decisive factor in the care of patients exposed to intimate partner violence, as well as a lack of information about which resources and assets the healthcare staff can collaborate with. Implementation of screening tools can be an initiation to detect violence. Theoretical knowledge of practical tools can create a trust-inspiring care of patients who seek care for intimate partner violence.
