Patients experiences of palliative care during the covid-19 pandemic : A literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The Covid-19 pandemic brought great challenges for palliative care, with limited presence of relatives, lack of resources and changed care routines. These factors affected patients' quality of life and care experience. Palliative care should be considered close and safe with high availability and based on the personal wishes and preferences. In order to improve future care, it is crucial to listen to the patients' own experiences and experiences of the pandemic period, which can provide valuable insight into how care can be adapted, designed and equipped for the future, to better meet the individual's needs.

Aim: The aim was to describe how adult patients with palliative care needs experienced the care during the covid-19 pandemic.

Method: A literature review with an inductive approach. Twelve articles were analyzed using thematic analysis. The model with the 6S was used as a theoretical frame of reference.

Results: The results showed that patients in palliative care, at different levels, experienced worry, anxiety and loneliness during the covid-19 pandemic. Patients stated that they avoided seeking care, experienced fear of being infected if they sought care, and concerns about further isolation from family and relatives if hospitalized. Patients also expressed gratitude for the care they received and demonstrated the ability to adapt to the current situation. Digital aids and healthcare visits via phone or video calls were perceived predominantly positively and could provide a sense of normality in a changed everyday life. Patients gave concrete suggestions for what a future could look like with a combination of physical and digital care visits.

Conclusion: Asking for the patient's experiences and opinions is important in the design of care for the individual patient. The goal is to promote participation, strengthen self-determination and raise the quality of life. This is especially important for patients with limited time left to live. Being able to extract useful information from a difficult time like the covid-19 pandemic and use it constructively is important for preparedness for future, similar crises.
