Older adults' experiences of social isolation during the covid-19 pandemic : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund

Abstract [en]

Background

Covid-19 means for many people, especially the elderly who were in risk groups, a comprehensive adjustment in their daily lives and existence. This is due to the restrictions that are implemented to protect the population from the virus. This is done by promoting social isolation and limiting relational interactions, which was a central aspect of the measures.

Aim

The purpose of this literature study was to shed light on older people's experiences of social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Method

The study includes a non-systematic literature review consisting of qualitative and quantitative scientific articles. The database searches used to find the articles were PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO. The articles were quality checked, analyzed and compiled into different categories. These categories cover three main themes: psychosocial impact of social isolation, changes in everyday routines and protective factors against isolation.

Results

The results section was based on main themes that were categorized into subthemes. These subthemes included experiences of loneliness, fear and anxiety, hopelessness, seeking meaning, economic challenges, lost structure in everyday life, adjustment of the social network, coping strategies and resilience, and support functions that enabled communication, which was a digital method. The results showed that many older people experienced depression, anxiety, hopelessness and loneliness due to the restrictions that were introduced. Social interactions turned out to be an important aspect that promoted existence and well-being.

Conclusions

Older people's experiences of social isolation during the pandemic were found to be a variety of negative and positive emotions, although predominantly negative. The results therefore show the importance of including adaptive support interventions that prevent the depressed experiences and instead promote well-being and good quality of life, especially during crisis situations in society that can lead to social isolation.
