Bakgrund

Smärta är ett vanligt förekommande problem som påverkar hela personens tillvaro. En inadekvat smärtbehandling kan uppstå vid nedsatt kommunikationsförmåga, något som vidare påverkar en ändamålsenlig och säker vård. Trots att vårdpersonal möter personer med nedsatt kommunikationsförmåga på flera platser inom vården är kunskapen inom området begränsad. Att beskriva vårdpersonalens erfarenheter av att bemöta personer med nedsatt kommunikation och smärta kan därmed bidra till att fylla kunskapsluckan.

Syfte

Syftet var att beskriva vårdpersonalens erfarenheter av att vårda patienter med smärta vid nedsatt kommunikationsförmåga.

Metod

Denna studie var en icke-systematisk litteraturöversikt baserad på 15 artiklar med både kvalitativ metodansats samt artiklar med både kvalitativ och kvantitativ data. Dessa artiklar hittades via databaserna PubMed och CINAHL med avgränsning till åren 2010-2025. Artiklarna kvalitetgranskades med Sophiahemmet Högskolas bedömningsmall och analyserades med en integrerad dataanalys.

Resultat

Resultatet presenterades i två huvudkategorier: Att bedöma smärta vid bristfällig verbal kommunikationsförmåga och Relationers betydelse i smärtbehandling vid nedsatt kommunikationsförmåga. Resultatet visade att vårdpersonalen anser att nedsatt kommunikationsförmåga medför svårigheter i smärtbehandling hos patienterna. Detta kunde bero på bristande kunskap eller svårigheter i att förstå och tolka individens indikationer på smärta. Vidare framkom att vårdrelationen har en avgörande roll i sammanhanget då det underlättade för personalen att känna igen smärtsignaler.

Slutsats

Litteraturöversikten visade att smärtbehandling hos patienter med nedsatt kommunikationsförmåga var en utmaning. Bristande kunskap och avsaknad av riktlinjer kunde göra att smärtan blev underbehandlad, något som orsakade ett lidande för patienterna. För att patienter med nedsatt kommunikationsförmåga ska få den vård de behöver krävs en ökad förståelse hos sjuksköterskor för patienternas behov.

Background

Pain is a common problem which affects the entire existence of the person. An inadequate pain treatment can occur in patients with impaired communication skills, which affects appropriate and safe healthcare. Although healthcare personnel meet people with communication disabilities in multiple healthcare settings, the knowledge is limited. By describing the experiences of healthcare personnel in addressing people with pain and impaired communication skills can therefore help to increase knowledge in the area.

Aim

The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of healthcare personnel in treating people with pain and impaired communication skills.

Method

This study was a non-systematic literature review conducted of 15 articles with both qualitative approach and articles with qualitative and quantitative data. The articles were retrieved from the databases PubMed and CINAHL with a limitation from 2010-2025. The articles were then reviewed with Sophiahemmet University's assessment tool for a quality review and analysed via an integrated data analysis.

Results

The result was presented in two main categories: To assess pain in people with impaired verbal communication skills and The role of relationships in pain management in impaired communication skills. The result showed that healthcare personnel think that impaired communication skills complicates the pain treatment. This could be due to lack of knowledge or difficulties in understanding and interpreting the patient's signs of pain. Furthermore, it appeared that the healthcare relationship forms a crucial role in this context because it facilitated the identification of pain signals.

Conclusions

The literature review showed that pain management in patients with impaired communication skills is a challenge for healthcare personnel. Lack of knowledge and the absence of guidelines resulted in undertreated pain, which caused suffering for the patients. For patients with impaired communication skills to get the healthcare they need, nurses need more understanding for the patients needs.
