Globalt förväntas en ökning av kognitiva sjukdomar. Det finns ett flertal olika kognitiva sjukdomar och de delas in i primärdegenerativa och sekundära sjukdomar. Kognitiva sjukdomar går inte att bota men i många fall kan symtomen lindras. Under senare stadie inleds ofta palliativ vård när patienten bedöms ha ett utökat behov och närmar sig livets slut. Den palliativa vården syftar till att lindra lidande och främja livskvaliteten för patienter med en obotlig sjukdom. Vårdpersonal som sjuksköterskor och omsorgspersonal vårdar ofta patienter med kognitiv sjukdom under palliativ vård. 

Syftet med litteraturstudien var att belysa vårdpersonals upplevelser av att erbjuda palliativ vård till patienter med kognitiv sjukdom.

Metoden för studien var en integrativ litteraturstudie med en induktiv ansats. Datainsamlingen utfördes i databaserna CINAHL och PubMed och resulterade i 15 vetenskapliga originalartiklar. Analysförfarandet har genomförts enligt en analysmetod för integrativa litteraturstudier. Kvalitativa, kvantitativa och studier med mixad metod har integrerats i litteraturstudiens resultat. 

Resultatet presenteras utifrån temat "Värdig vård i livets slut - utmaningar och framgångsfaktorer", som sedan utmynnas i sex subtema. I resultatet behandlas komplexiteten kring smärtlindring, känslomässiga utmaningar i interaktionen mellan vårdpersonal och patienter, samarbete vårdpersonal emellan, anhörigas roll vid palliativ vård, vikten av erfarenhet och kunskap samt användningen av patientens livsberättelse i den palliativa vården.

Slutsatsen var att det identifierats ett utbildningsbehov gällande palliativ vård för patienter med kognitiv sjukdom samt att anhörigas kunskaper om patienten spelade en viktig roll för att kunna tolka och lindra symtom i livets slut. 

Globally, an increase in cognitive disorders is expected. There are several different types of cognitive disorders, which are classified as primary degenerative and secondary diseases. Cognitive disorders cannot be cured, however in many cases symptoms can be alleviated. In later stages of illness, palliative care is often initiated when the patient is assessed to have an increased needs and is approaching the end of life. Palliative care aims to alleviate suffering and promote quality of life for patients with an incurable disease. Healthcare professionals, such as nurses and care staff often care for patients with cognitive disorders receiving palliative care. 

The aim of the literature study was to highlight the experiences of healthcare professionals providning palliative care to patients with cognitive disorders. 

The method of the study was an integrative literature review with an inductive approach. Data collection was conducted in the CINAHL and PubMed databases, resulting in 15 scientific original articles. The data-analysis was carried out according to a methodology for integrative literature reviews. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies were integrated into the results of the literature review. 

The results are presented based on the theme "Dignified care at the end of life - challenges and success factors", and divided subsequently into six sub-themes. The results address the complexity of pain management, emotional challenges in the interaction between healthcare staff and patients, collaboration among healthcare professionals, the role of family members in palliative care, the importance of experience and knowledge, and the use of the patient´s life story in palliative care.

The conclusion identified a need for education in palliative care for patients with cognitive disorders, and that the knowledge of family members about the patient played an important role in interpreting and alleviating symptoms in end of life care.
