Kritisk sjukdom eller skada kan uppstå närsomhelst och närstående kan på något sätt vara närvarande. Omhändertagandet av dessa patienter måste gå fort då hälso- och sjukvårdspersonalen arbetar under tidspress för att rädda liv. Hälso- och sjukvårdspersonalen har både positiva och negativa upplevelser av närståendes närvaro. Patienterna upplever stort stöd i att ha närstående närvarande. Den familjefokuserade vården ser patienten och dess närstående som en enhet som är beroende av varandra för att må bra. 

Syftet med studien var att undersöka närståendes upplevelser av att närvara vid kritisk sjukdom eller skada i mötet med akutsjukvården. 

Studien genomfördes genom en litteraturöversikt med systematisk metod och induktiv ansats. Totalt 15 artiklar publicerade mellan 2015–2023 analyserades. Artiklarnas kvalitet bedömdes med hjälp av ett bedömningsformulär. Artiklarna analyserades sedan och meningsenheter plockades ut som kodades och sedan sammanställdes till teman. 

Resultatet presenteras inom fyra teman; känslomässiga reaktioner och hantering av dessa, informationens och delaktighetens betydelse, fysisk närhet samt sjukvårdens resurser och fysiska miljö. Att en patient drabbades av kritisk sjukdom eller skada kom som en chock för de närstående och det var svårt att hantera alla de olika känslor som uppkom. Vidare upplevde de närstående ett stort behov av information på ett sätt som de lätt kunde förstå. De närstående upplevde också ett stort behov av att få vara fysiskt närvarande. Närstående kunde också se brister inom sjukvården så som tidsbrist hos personalen eller bristande fysisk miljö på sjukhusen. 

Slutsats av studien är att närstående kan uppleva en känslomässig berg-och dalbana och behöver hjälp med att hantera dessa känslor samtidigt som de även upplever behov av information. 

Critical illness or injury can occur at any time and next of kin can somehow be present. The care of these patients often needs to be swift, with healthcare professionals working under time pressure to save lives. Healthcare professionals have both positive and negative experiences of the presence of next of kin. Patients experience significant support from having their next of kin present. Family centered care views the patient and their next of kin as a unit that relies on each other to maintain well-being.

The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of next of kin who are present during critical illness or injury in the encounter with emergency medical services.

The study was conducted through a literature review with a systematic method and inductive approach. A total of 15 articles published between 2015 and 2023 were analysed. The quality of the articles was assessed using an evaluation form. The articles were then analysed, and meaningful units were extracted, coded, and grouped into themes.

The results are presented within four themes: emotional reactions and coping with these, the significance of information and participation, physical proximity and healthcare resources and physical environment. The occurrence of a critical illness or injury in a patient were a shock to the next of kin, and they found it difficult to handle all the different emotions that arose. Furthermore, the next of kin expressed a significant need for information in a way that was easy for them to understand. They also felt a strong need to be physically present. Next of kin could also observe deficiencies within healthcare, such as staff being pressed for time or shortcomings in the physical environment at hospitals.

The conclusion of the study is that next of kin can experience an emotional roller coaster and need help managing these emotions while also expressing a need for information.
