Relatives experiences when people with cognitive disorder are hospitalized : a literature review (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Cognitive disorders are complex conditions which contribute to individuals with cognitive disorders having specific needs. Relatives play a significant role in the care of people with cognitive disorders and in person-centered care. Relatives’ experiences of stays in inpatient care can contribute to increasing knowledge about how healthcare can improve support for relatives of individuals with cognitive disorders and include relatives in care.

The aim was to describe the relatives’ experience of people with cognitive disorders staying in inpatient care.

The method employed was a literature review with a systematic approach. Database searches were conducted in CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO. Fifteen scientific articles were included and analyzed using an integrated analysis.

Results are presented under three overarching main categories summarizing relatives' experiences of people with cognitive disorders staying in inpatient care: The caregiving role, Relationship with healthcare professionals, and Care quality and environment. The results are categorized with associated subcategories.

The conclusion was that relatives of people with cognitive disorders experience several deficiencies and challenges in connection with care within inpatient settings. These include a poorly adapted environment, lack of communication and participation, and insufficient competence of the health care staff. In order to improve care, there is a need for increased understanding of the diverse needs of individuals with cognitive disorders and their relatives, as well as a more person-centered and equitable approach that promotes active collaboration among all involved parties.
