To live with endometriosis : a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund

Abstract [en]

Background

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that affects one in ten women of fertile age. The disease affects women both physically and psychologically. There is currently no curative treatment, only symptomatic treatment in form of drugs or surgery. There are gaps in knowledge about the disease, both in society and among the healthcare professions, which contributes to a diagnosis delay.

Aim

The aim was to highlight adult women’s experiences of living with endometriosis.

Method

This non-systematic literature review consisted of 17 scientific articles of both qualitative and quantitative methods. Database searches were systematically performed in PubMed and CINAHL. The articles were quality checked by using Sophiahemmet University's assessment basis and the included articles were of high and medium quality. The literature review´s data analysis was performed based on an integrated analysis model.

Results

The result led to four categories that emerged from the integrated data analysis. The experience of endometriosis was described based on the categories: the experience of symptoms from endometriosis and the experience of how endometriosis affects relationships and the encounter with healthcare. The results described how the women experienced living with endometriosis from different perspectives.

Conclusions

Endometriosis negatively affected the women's perceived quality of life and created suffering in several different dimensions, where the younger women experienced a bigger impact than older women. Pain was the most experienced symptom, which also created the most physical and psychological suffering. Healthcare personnel’s lack of knowledge was perceived to create both a delay in diagnosis and poor health care encounters. The nurse encounter proved to be of great importance to the perceived quality of life of women with endometriosis.
