Adult patients experiences of the triageprocess in the emergency department : a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Emergency care is provided every hour of the day and is available when patients need it. Having to seek emergency care can create different feelings for the patient, such as anxiety or nervousness. These feelings can also increase when patients’ understanding of the triageprocess is lacking. Emergency care requires the specialist nurse to prioritize and triage patients correctly based on symptoms and anamnesis. At the same time the emergency nurse is expected to be able to respond to the patient's emotional and medical needs.

The aim of this literature review was to illustrate a patient’s experiences of the triage process in an emergency department.

The method used was a literature review. Fifteen articles were included in the study, with both qualitative and quantitative method.

The results show that the patients felt that there were several different factors that influenced the experience of the triage process. Those factors were experiences of meetings with the care staff, dialogue, integrity, information, waiting time, environment, and competence. The result showed that the biggest factor was the communication between patient and care staff that had the biggest impact on patient satisfaction.

The conclusion of the result in this study was that good communication and being well informed was important for the experience of the triage process for the patients at the emergency department. To get information while waiting increased the understanding and patient satisfaction. The patients experienced a good response from the nurse during triage, but wished that the nurse was more present after the triage process. More contact with the nurses was requested while the patients stayed at the emergency department in order to prevent medical injuries.
