Abstract [en]

PURPOSE: The objective of this scoping review is to compile and examine characteristics and impacts of live music interventions on the health and wellbeing of children, families, and health care professionals in paediatric hospital care.

METHODS: We searched four scientific databases for peer-reviewed publications of empirical studies of all study designs. The first author screened the publications, with spot-checks for eligibility by the second and third authors. Data extraction and quality assessment were made by the first author with support from the second and third. Additionally, the included studies were screened for quality appraisal. The analysis followed an inductive, interpretive approach for synthesis.

RESULTS: Quantitative features were screened and compiled, and qualitative inductive analyses of findings were elaborated into categories connected to research questions. The reported impacts were thematized through emergent features of importance and prerequisites beneficial for successful interventions. Recurrent outcomes present themes of positive affect, copingand reduced hospitalization. Emotional regulation, play and participation, age, session design, adaptivity, and familiarity present benefits, barriers, and facilitators for outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS: Findings from collected empirical research display philosophy, practice, and relations as keys for characteristics, impacts, and implications of live music interventions in paediatric hospital care. The communicative aspects of music appear at the core of importance.

Abstract [en]

There is plenty of documentation that strengthens the fact that music, and music played on a record player, were a lifelong source of creativity for the legendary Swedish theatre director and filmmaker Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007). Thanks to a scholarship received from The Bergman Estate on Fårö, Sweden in 2017, I was given the opportunity to make a thorough examination of Bergman's record collection. This resulted in a discography of a private as well as limited collection that was published in Fontes Artis Musicae in December 2018. In this follow-up article, which is an expanded version of the paper "Ingmar Bergman's Record Collection – A Discography", presented at the 2019 annual IAML Congress in Kraków, I have dug deeper into the findings. With the purpose of understanding Ingmar Bergman as a person in light of his phonograms, as well as tracing patterns between the discography and the choice of music in Bergman's oeuvre, four major themes are presented. One theme is linked to dance scenes in Bergman's productions; another relates to creativity, inspiration and mediating of emotions and atmospheres in staging. A third theme explains how Bergman used the phonogram as an artifact to spread his productions to a broader audience outside of the theatre and cinema framework. A fourth theme processes the musical influence on comfort and music as a base from which discussions that regard feelings and emotions stem. This theme is associated with music therapy.

Abstract [en]

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: This study sought to describe how women in Mexico who have suffered from gender-based violence experience their encounters with healthcare professionals.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence is a worldwide problem. Previous studies have described that women feel they are not being cared for appropriately during their encounters with healthcare professionals. This study was conducted in Mexico, which has a high rate of gender inequality.

DESIGN: A descriptive, qualitative study was conducted.

METHODS: Face-to-face interviews were conducted with seven women. An inductive content analysis was used to analyse the interviews.

RESULTS: The analyses resulted in four categories: Feelings of guilt about being abused, Feelings of being unimportant, Feelings of taking time and Feelings of being insecure/secure. The women emphasised the importance of healthcare professionals taking time out of their busy schedules for them. When they treated the women with respect and genuine interest, the women felt secure. When the healthcare professionals did not meet these expectations, feelings of frustration and mistrust were elicited.

CONCLUSIONS: Feelings of being listened to and safety were considered important aspects in a positive encounter, whereas feeling a lack of time or interest often led to negative experiences such as frustration with and distrust of the healthcare system. These results imply that healthcare professionals may have deficiencies with regard to how these women are treated because these women do not feel that they receive the proper support.

Abstract [en]

While nursing and music therapy have been two important disciplines in analysis of pain management, there has been little research exploring these areas from a cross disciplinary perspective. This paper highlights the importance of acknowledging and beginning to understand the role of scientific and practical cooperation between music therapists and health care professionals.

In particular, our aim has been to initiate a dialogue about how subject-specific knowledge from both music therapy and nursing – in terms of person-centered care – can strengthen the usage of music as pain management for short-term management of acute pain during painful treatments such as dressing change procedure in wound care. On this basis, a pilot study was conducted regarding wound care. The study has been approved by the ethics committee in Stockholm. The paper is based on the result from this study where the aim was to find a model for pain management as a complementary treatment based on knowledge from nursing and music therapy.

Philosophical starting points were the “life-world” perspective of Merleau-Ponty as well as Ricoeur’s ethical thoughts. The result has a potential reach beyond wound care that can be used in several treatments that entails acute pain.
